Overview
Coventry University is a public research university in the city of Coventry, England. It was established as a University through the Further and Higher Education Act 1992 and was formerly known as Lanchester Polytechnic until 1987 and Coventry Polytechnic until it gained university status in 1992.
It has its campuses in London, Coventry, and Scarborough. The university comprises three faculties and one school and manages a number of commercial subsidiaries that provide business services to local and national organizations. It is known for facilitating research that makes a significant contribution to numerous global challenges. Recently, Research Excellence Framework (REF) rated significant areas of Coventry’s research as ‘world-leading and ‘internationally excellent’, with its allied health professions work being ranked joint 5th in the UK and almost three-quarters of its work in the art and design category being rated as either four or three-star quality.
The University is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, University Alliance, and Universities UK. Nationally, Coventry is ranked 13th by The Guardian University league tables 2019, 44th by The Times and Sunday Times University Guide 2020 and 531-540th by QS University World Ranking. Coventry has been awarded as a ‘University of the Year for Student Experience’ in 2019 by Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide. Coventry University’s Department of Industrial Design won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education in the ‘Engineering and Technology category for “educating tomorrow’s world leaders in automotive design” in 2007 Coventry was named ‘Entrepreneurial University of the Year’ in the Times Higher Education Awards 2011. Over 50,000 students including more than 5,000 international students from more than 130 countries study at diverse and vibrant universities.
